I’ve followed Jack Layton since he first entered the federal scene, and this year he finally swayed me to vote for his party. Maybe it was because I was overcome by the huge turnaround in Quebec, or possibly because Gilles Duceppe was the apparent front runner in my riding, either way there was a humble aura that hung over his embattled state for change and hope.
He was on the verge embarking on a greater road, unfortunately, as we all know that opportunity which has eluded him for many years was lost…

For 2+ hours Toronto was showered with lightning. I managed to shoot a few frames in the rain, with film-maker Anton and studio manager Tals!

Why Quebec is the only place…
I have always had an admiration for street photography. The act of documenting moments on a particular day I find appealing and quite challenging. It may also pose problems for photographers here in Québec. Believe it or not, Québec is the only place in North America where you are required to get permission from the subjects you photograph in public spaces, and even more so if you plan to make the images public. It all goes back to the infamous photo taken in 1988 by photographer Gilbert Duclos of a young woman sitting outside in downtown Montréal.
The documentary below called “La Rue Zone Interdite” discusses the issues of the law and how it affects photographers. Interviews with the great Willy Ronis, Marc Riboud, and others are featured. There is a touching moment at the end with Willy Ronis who lived nearly to be a 100 years old, God rest his soul.
Tulum Ruins in Quintana Roo, Mexico

Tourists observing several principal Mayan structures.

Tourists admiring the historical surroundings.

The beach site just below the cliff was considered to be an important point of trade around the peninsula.
The often crowded Tulum ruins beach site.

Project “Mixed”
I’ve started a new personal project looking into the increase of mixed couples in Canada. I’m currently in search off couples who would like to spend some time over coffee and talk about their experiences and difficulties in being in a mixed relationship. And maybe afterwards, allow me to take their portrait and share a part of their story.
If you are interested in participating or know of a couple who might, please leave me a comment or contact me at photoinfo@markacadiz.com. Below you’ll catch a glimpse of what I’m trying to do.
Cheers,

“To chart a course, one must have a direction. In reality, the eye is no better than the philosophy behind it. The photographer creates, evolves a better, more selective, more acute seeing eye by looking ever more sharply at what is going on in the world. Like every other means of expression, photography, if it is to be utterly honest and direct, should be related to the life of the times – the pulse of today. The photograph may be presented as finely and artistically as you will; but to merit serious consideration, must be directly connected with the world we live in.”
